James Baldwin - A Rebellious Son of America

James Arthur Baldwin was an American writer, novelist, journalist, playwright, and activist.

He was born on August 2, 1924, in New York City. As the eldest child in a large family, he spent his childhood in poverty, growing up in the slums of Harlem.

At the age of fourteen, he became a preacher in a Pentecostal church on Fireside Avenue, reflecting this experience in his first partly autobiographical novel, "Go Tell It on the Mountain" (1953).

In 1945, Baldwin won the first of many scholarships and awards that allowed him to pursue his literary career.

Upon the recommendation of Richard Wright, he traveled to Paris on a Rosenwald Fellowship, where he lived for nine years. During this time, he wrote "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and the novel "Giovanni's Room" (1956), which brought him recognition in the United States.
